Veteran Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected as the 23rd President of Bangladesh. In a vote held at the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament), he secured 255 votes to defeat Col (retd) Oli Ahmed, candidate of the 11-party opposition alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, who managed 88 votes.

First Contested Election in 35 Years: This marked the first contested presidential vote in Bangladesh in 35 years (since 1991), as previous presidential selections were mostly unopposed.

Voting Breakdown: Out of 349 eligible Members of Parliament, 343 participated in the secret ballot election supervised by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin. All 343 cast ballots were declared valid.

Cause of Vacancy: The presidential election was necessitated following the resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin on health grounds in July 2026.

Profile of Mirza Fakhrul: Fakhrul (78) is a 1971 Liberation War veteran and served as BNP's Secretary General for over 15 years (2011–2026). Prior to his election as head of state, he was serving as the Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives in Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s cabinet.
