The Maharashtra government has declared snakebite a notifiable disease, making it mandatory for all healthcare institutions, hospitals, medical colleges, and practitioners to report every suspected or confirmed snakebite case and death.

Background: The move follows a tragic incident in Gadchiroli district where three tribal schoolgirls died after being bitten by a venomous snake.
Objective: Aimed at strengthening case surveillance, ensuring timely medical intervention, and managing the supply and distribution of Anti-Snake Venom (ASV).
Reporting Mechanism: Healthcare facilities must report cases to District Health Officers or District Surgeons. Data will be recorded via the Health Management Information System (HMIS) and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).
Stock Tracking: Institutions must maintain real-time tracking of ASV vials received, administered, and available in stock to prevent shortages in high-incidence areas.
