Global Demographics: According to the WFD, there are over 70 million deaf individuals globally, with more than 80% living in developing nations and using over 300 distinct sign languages.
History & UN Resolution: Proclaimed via UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/72/161 adopted on December 19, 2017, following a proposal by the WFD, the day was first celebrated in 2018.
