Indian Army Contingent Departs for Thailand for Exercise MAITREE-XV

Why in the News?
An 85-member contingent of the Indian Army has departed for Thailand to participate in the 15th edition of the India-Thailand Joint Military Exercise 'MAITREE-XV' (2026). The exercise is scheduled to take place from August 18 to August 31, 2026.
Key Features / Major Points:
Contingent Composition: The Indian Army is primarily represented by troops from the 9 Gorkha Rifles, while the Royal Thai Army is represented by personnel from the 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry Brigade.
Exercise Objective: To enhance combined capabilities in executing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations in jungle and semi-urban environments under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
Training Activities: The exercise involves tactical drills, combat discussions, technology exchanges, and a joint validation exercise.
Previous Edition: The 14th edition of Exercise MAITREE was held at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya, India, in September 2025.
