India & MERCOSUR Sign First Additional Protocol to PTA

India and MERCOSUR have officially signed the First Additional Protocol to the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), marking a major milestone toward facilitating paperless trade and modernizing bilateral customs procedures.

Electronic Certificates of Origin (e-CoO): The protocol amends the rules of origin to grant electronic Certificates of Origin the same legal validity and identical value as traditional paper-based certificates.
Efficiency and Cost Reduction: This digital transition is designed to significantly cut transaction costs, streamline verification processes, and reduce processing times for exporters and importers.
Agreement Background: Originally signed on January 25, 2004, the India-MERCOSUR PTA entered into force on June 1, 2009. It covers preferential tariff concessions on 450 tariff lines by India and 452 lines by MERCOSUR.
