Brazil and India Move to Widen Mercosur Trade Pact

Why in the News?
Brazil and India are set to significantly expand their existing Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Mercosur, the primary South American trade bloc.
Key Features / Major Points:
Expanding Scope: Brazilian Development, Industry, Trade and Services Minister Márcio Elias Rosa stated that the current pact covers only around 450 tariff lines, making it too limited for present trade capabilities.
Finalizing Terms of Reference: On the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with his Brazilian counterpart to complete the terms of reference for broader negotiations.
Key Focus Areas: Beyond traditional trade, the expanded framework aims for deeper cooperation in the bioeconomy, circular economy, digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI), skills development, and defence.
